🧵 Jelly Roll Rug, Table Runner or Placemat Workshop

Date: Wednesday, September 23, 2026
Time: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Teacher: Sharla M.
Location: Maple Leaf Quilting Company, 141 River Avenue, Cochrane, AB
Price: $65
Skill Level: Confident Beginner / Intermediate (must be comfortable operating your sewing machine)

Turn a jelly roll into something cozy, functional, and beautiful! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to transform pre-cut fabric strips and batting into a jelly roll rug, placemat, or table runner. Using simple machine stitches (straight and zig-zag), Sharla will guide you through folding, stitching, and shaping your strips into a durable piece that’s as fun to make as it is to use.

You’ll start small in class by creating a placemat, learning how to manage curves and build your project smoothly. From there, you’ll have the skills, tips, and confidence to tackle a larger rug at home — or stick with smaller makes like placemats or runners if that’s more your style.

What’s Included:

  • Jelly roll batting

  • Step-by-step instructions in a supportive class environment

  • 10% off coupon for class supplies

🧰 What to Bring:
(Fabric and supplies must be purchased ahead of time; detailed list provided upon registration.)

  • Jelly roll

  • Sewing machine in good working order (with foot pedal & power cord)

  • Zig-zag foot + extension table (if you have one)

  • Coordinating thread for your fabric

  • Scissors/snips

  • Optional: Clover Jelly Roll Tool, Jelly Roll Rug Pattern

👉 All materials are available at Maple Leaf Quilting Company, and your 10% discount applies to all class supplies.

Important: This class requires that you are comfortable using your sewing machine, including basic troubleshooting.

📏VERY Limited spots available — extra space is needed for this project! While you may not finish a full rug during class, you’ll leave with the know-how (and confidence!) to finish it at home — and start making them as gifts for everyone you love.

    Sharla M.

    Sewing/Quilting/Crafts Teacher

I’ve been a seamstress for 42 years and a quilter for 28—and yes, my favourite carry-on when I fly is my sewing machine! I started teaching sewing classes when I was just 18, and over the past 35+ years, I’ve taught more than 80 different classes to students of all ages and skill levels. In all those years, I’ve learned that sewing is about so much more than stitches—it's about confidence, creativity, and connection. My absolute favourite part of teaching is that moment when a student lights up and says, “I can’t believe I made this!” It never gets old. I believe with my whole heart that everyone is capable of creating something beautiful. My goal is to guide you gently, meet you where you are, and help you discover just how much you can do—with a little patience, some fabric, and a lot of encouragement.
